You don't imagine feeling better in the mountains. Your body measurably changes.

For a century we treated "get some fresh air" as folk advice. Then researchers started measuring it — cortisol, heart-rate variability, blood pressure, attention, sleep — in forests, at altitude, under dark skies. The findings are consistent enough that Japan built a public-health practice, shinrin-yoku, around them. Thach didn't invent any of this. We just built the collection to let it happen: slow stays, real dark, air with something in it, and no reason to check your phone.

It turns the stress response down

Time among trees is repeatedly linked to lower cortisol, slower pulse, and a shift toward the “rest and digest” branch of the nervous system. The effect shows up within a couple of hours and deepens over a few days — which is exactly why a single hurried night never quite works, and a slow stay does.

Cities demand constant “directed attention” — the effortful focus that filters traffic, screens, and noise. It runs down like a battery. Natural settings engage a softer, involuntary attention instead, letting the effortful kind recover. People leave measurably better at concentrating, not just calmer.

The air is doing something

Conifers like deodar and pine release phytoncides — airborne compounds that studies associate with a marked rise in the immune system's natural-killer cells that can linger for weeks. You can't see it or smell it clearly. You're breathing it the whole time you're on the ridge.

You sleep like you're supposed to

Away from streetlight and screens, melatonin arrives on time and your body clock resets to real daylight. In one study, a week of natural light shifted sleep-timing markers substantially earlier — and mountain cold and genuine dark only deepen it. Several of our perches have no signal at all — not a limitation, a feature.
